What a month!
There are many new subscribers, so let me start off by saying welcome and thank you for subscribing! If you haven’t already, be sure to download your free novella, Last Performance at the Three Dragons Inn, and free short story, Falling from a Golden Sky. Both works expand upon the world of The Song of the Burning Heart. You can find the download links in your welcome email.
It’s been a fantastic few weeks for The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree. Most excitingly, the book was featured in a Bookbub promotion. During the promotion, The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree made it all the way to #3 in the Amazon rankings in the Fantasy Adventure Fiction category. Before publication, my goal was to sell more than 1,000 copies of the TPOTYT in its first year. I’m considerably past that mark after only seven months.
When I published The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree, I had one overarching plan: work hard on the remainder of the series while carving out the time to consistently tell people about the book and my plans for the series. As a full-time public-school teacher, I always knew that promoting the series was going to be a slow burn. But I also believed in my heart of hearts that there was an audience for the book; I simply needed to find the readers. To begin finding that audience has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you to everyone who has read the book. I’m deep into writing Book Two, and I can’t wait to show you where the series is heading.
However, I also know that not everyone has taken the plunge. To that end, this month I thought it would be fun to create a list detailing the top ten reasons why you might enjoy reading The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree.
Who doesn’t love a star-crossed, enemies-to-lovers romance that draws on influences as wide-ranging as The Kingkiller Chronicles and The Princess Bride?
A dragon looms in the background of the novel, foreshadowing the madness to come.
One of the characters is a stringy-haired rodent of a man who plays the fiddle and loves stealing other people’s songs. Also, he might not be entirely human.
Have you seen the talented Catrina Barquist’s gorgeous cover design? I mean, come on!
You believe that the best prophecies in fantasy books are always misleading.
What’s a fantasy book without a spat-upon bastard who wants nothing more than to prove a couple things to a hatemongering world?
Multiple POV baby!
Good fantasy knows how to thread the needle between the slow-burn stitch-work of crafting a compelling world and the reader's need to experience jabs of action.
The author cares deeply about the writing craft and is determined to create stylistic and authentic works of fantasy fiction for the enjoyment of those who want to join him on his writing journey.
You’re looking for books in the vein of ASOIAF while you’re waiting on ole’ Georgie to finish up. :)
Okay, time for a little trivia! Because of the influx of subscribers, I’m offering an extension on last month’s question. If you’re curious about the rules of the contest, check out last month’s post HERE. To make a long story short, two winners will receive an annotated paperback copy of The Prophecy of the Yubriy Tree. There are two ways to win. #1: Have the highest score at the end of the contest (including tiebreakers). #2: Be selected in a random drawing from all participants who answer every question, regardless of their score. I will not be posting a scoreboard, so don’t let fear of getting questions wrong stop you from participating!
Ready to start answering? Here’s last month’s question.
And here’s this month’s!
Last month I shared a handful of the #iwriteepicfantasy posts that I create for social media. One of my recent favorites is below. You can find more of them over on my Instagram page. I also share them on my…um…(ahem)…Tiktok page if you’re so inclined (no link; I’m going to make you search for that one, haha).
I write of the castle on the far horizon, arrogant in its assumed impregnability. I write of the men and women willing to dash their lives on fortresses of stone to prove that hubris misplaced. I write epic fantasy.
Do you have any questions about the series? Feel free to leave them in the comments.
Before You Go!
I recently had the pleasure of reading K.G. Bolingbroke’s novel Nocturne. If you’re interested in a historical fantasy with shades of horror — or if you’re interested in the legend of Vlad the Impaler — you should check the novel out. Here’s my review on Goodreads.
